America's horses have a new place to kick up their hooves. And when they do, every foot and hoof detail will be fully recorded and analyzed!

Earlier this summer, Michigan State University (MSU) opened the doors of its new world-class equine biomechanics research center, the Mary Anne McPhail Equine Performance Center, on its East Lansing, Mich., campus.

Farrier Center Is A Key

Inside the research building, which is dedicated to gait analysis, movement and conditioning analysis of sport horses, is the new Mustad Farrier Center, the result of funding from the Mustad Hoofcare Group.

Designed for the application of experimental shoes and the testing of farrier-related products on research horses, the  shoeing center provides the first space at the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine where a horse can be shod safely with adequate lighting and ventilation.

Capewell Horsenails and St. Croix Forge, Inc., two companies in the Mustad Hoofcare Group, cooperated to fund the farrier center. Mustad’s U.S. headquarters is in Bloomfield, Conn., where Capewell Horsenails are manufactured, while St. Croix Forge, the world’s largest manufacturer of horseshoes, is located in Forest Lake, Minn.
