An International Horseshoeing Hall of Famer is adding another honor to his resume.

David Nicholls, AWCF, of Sussex, England, received the Medalist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) in King Charles III’s Birthday Honors List.

The honor “recognizes his exceptional services to the craft of farriery and the welfare of the welfare of the horse,” according to the Worshipful Company of Farriers. Nicholls tells The Argus that he’s “shocked and humbled.”

“It’s always a surprise when anything like this happens,” Nicholls says. “You just carry on with your normal day. You don’t realize you’re thought about by others. It just seems a normal day for me and the surprise is that people appreciate the effort you put in. I don’t do it for praise. I do it for the horses.”

Nicholls operated The Farriery Practice, a multi-farrier business that specializes in therapeutic care, since 1990. He is the technical director of Total Foot Protection, a farrier and vet supply business. He’s a member of the British Farriers and Blacksmiths Association, Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Farriers — Freedom of the City of London, and an Equine Lameness Prevention Organization director.

He was inducted into the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame in 2020.
