I would like to recognize Jon LaPlante for the Farriers Spotlight.

Jon is more than just a farrier. He represents resilience, dedication and true horsemanship. As a United States Marine Corps veteran and owner of 5J Corrective Shoeing & Blacksmith Farriery, he has built his life around service, discipline and a deep respect for the horse.

Introduced to the trade at a young age by his father, Jon developed a strong foundation in proper hoof care, balance and blacksmithing. He later advanced his skills through formal training at the Oklahoma Horseshoeing School, focusing on corrective shoeing and long-term soundness for performance horses.

What truly sets Jon apart is his perseverance. After a life-changing accident that resulted in the loss of his leg, many might have stepped away from such a physically demanding trade. Jon did the opposite. He returned to the anvil and the horse, continuing to trim and shoe from his wheelchair. His determination speaks louder than words, he shows up every day and gets the job done.

Serving across Blackfoot Confederacy Territory in Alberta and Montana, Jon brings not only skill but heart to every horse and client. His work is grounded in doing right by the horse, building trust and leaving every animal better than he found it.

Beyond his craftsmanship, Jon is an inspiration to others. He proves that no matter the obstacles, you can continue doing what you love. His story reminds us that strength isn’t just physical, it’s built through purpose, grit and commitment.

Jon LaPlante is exactly the kind of farrier who deserves to be recognized; not only for his skill at the anvil but for the example he sets in life.
