Joe Lopez told his family he would leave this world one of two ways — working at his anvil or on the dance floor. The founder of Lopez Farrier Tools and Rebuilds passed away unexpectedly Oct. 17, 2026, while dancing at the Eagles Lodge. He was 84.
“He loved his music and was known to have it blasting in his shop, often dancing along while he worked,” according to a family statement posted to Facebook on Oct. 31. “Dancing with family and friends was one of his greatest joys. … Although our hearts are broken, knowing he spent his final moments doing something he loved brings us comfort.”
Lopez, a master toolmaker and rebuilder, began his more than 50-year career in the farrier industry at GE Forge & Tool. He was the company’s only employee when Walt and Beth Garner bought it in 1973.
“Throughout his years with GE, he made significant contributions through his craftsmanship, knowledge and work with farrier tools,” his family writes.
Lopez established Lopez Rebuilds in Santa Maria, Calif., and later Lopez Farrier Tools, respected for quality workmanship and superior customer service.
“My father truly loved what he did,” according to his family. “After losing my mother in 2020, he began slowing down, but his passion for his craft never faded. At 84, he continued working and taking pride in his tools. My dad leaves behind more than a business. He leaves behind a legacy of craftsmanship, hard work, dedication and friendships that will never be forgotten.”
