Hall of Fame Farrier Doyle Blagg Passes Away

International Horseshoeing Hall of Famer Doyle Blagg of Collinsville, Texas, passed away over the weekend.

The fourth-generation farrier shod nearly every kind of equine discipline over his 6-decade career, including American Paint Horse Association and Appaloosa champions. However, Blagg is best known for working with many of the top Quarter Horses breeders and trainers while specializing in cutting horses.

What impressed his peers most, though, was his willingness to help other farriers and his commitment to sharing his knowledge with farriers, trainers and horse owners.

“Doyle Blagg is one of the main reasons I shoe horses today,” says Pat Burton, of Crowley, Texas. “I met him in 1981 [and] watched him shoe a black rope horse at the Denton County Fairgrounds. I was in awe of his skill and professionalism. In the following years, I would visit him many times and had the opportunity to work on horses with Doyle and learn so much from him. Through the years, whenever I had a tough case I couldn’t figure out, Doyle Blagg was one of my ‘go-to’ mentors who always had great advice on even the most difficult cases.”

A self-effacing man who enjoyed great popularity with his peers, Blagg urged farriers and horse owners to always pursue more knowledge. Despite his extensive experience, he never stopped learning, noting that keeping an open mind enabled him to learn from everyone.
