More and more farriers are sharing their work on social media. Explaining your thought process, offering nuanced opinions and approaching hoof care from multiple different angles is common on Facebook, YouTube and other social media platforms. Instead of withholding information, my feed is full of dissections, before and after photos, clinic announcements and long-form shoeing videos.
This collaboration is what drives the industry forward. The only problem is it can be a hassle to achieve. You need a camera operator who can always get the right angles at the right moment. Or, you need to set down a hoof, grab your phone and try to take a steady photo. With a fidgety or sore-footed horse, that can be difficult. But if the camera can see what your eyes see while you’re trimming, rasping or shoeing, that would help streamline content generation. And it might help a young farrier just starting out better understand balance or hoof shape.
Have you ever seen GoPro footage of athletes skiing down a mountain or a surfer riding a wave in slow-motion? It’s immersive, but it’s also informative. You can see — up close — how they’re doing what they do. Outside of a GoPro strapped to your chest, Meta’s AI glasses are an option for sharing informative content on social media. It can take photos as well as record video and audio to capture more day-in-the-life or hands-on content. Here’s an example of what that might look like.
“It might help a young farrier just starting out…”
How do you like to capture your content? Do you think point-of-view style videos would be helpful for your audience to understand certain hoof-care situations up close? Or, is it an unnecessary piece of tech?
For me, capturing content on a ride along with a farrier or recording a clinic might be streamlined by avoiding carrying around bulky camera equipment. However, it also raises privacy concerns. Do you know when someone is recording you or taking your photo? What are your thoughts on using Meta’s AI glasses to record hoof-care educational content?
