Prosthetic Leg Gives Horse Second Chance

Four-year-old Bet On A Star will run again after losing his hoof, reports WPTV. Better known as “81,” this Quarter Horse will be fitted with a prosthetic device near the end of 2018. After Hurricane Irma hit his barn in August 2017, 81 was stranded in standing water for days. A cut on his ankle became infected with a waterborne disease, which later led to complications, and as a result, he lost a hoof.

Study Links Asymmetrical Force Vectors With Uneven Hooves

Naturally, asymmetries can be found in humans as well as horses. When it comes to horses, the typical forms of structural asymmetry are in bone size, muscular development and hoof dimensions. It has been noted by Sarah Jane Hobbs, et al, in their recently-published study that about 5% of Dutch Warmbloods have uneven dorsal hoof wall angles in the front limbs. The development of this unevenness can often be attributed to horses favoring one side or the other, often termed sidedness.

Soaking Hay For Ponies Many studies have examined the effects of soaking hay, specifically on the hay itself, but this randomized crossover experiment examined the effects of feeding regular hay, soaked hay (soaked in water for 14 hours, followed by 30 minutes to drain) and haylage on the insulin and glucose responses in 12 ponies — six with normal insulin/glucose metabolism and six with insulin dysregulation.
