Kansas farrier James Arthur Shields passed away May 3, 2026. He was 83.

Shields dedicated his life to the care and trade of horses. His skill as a farrier was complemented by his ability to connect with the horses he worked with, earning him the admiration of those who knew him and respected his craft. He also served as a Sheriff's Deputy with the Miami County Sheriff's Office in Paola, Kan.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Shields cherished the time he spent with close friends, valuing the bonds and camaraderie that enriched his life. His warmth and friendly nature left a lasting impact on those around him. He is remembered for his unwavering integrity, work ethic, and the gentle spirit he displayed in every aspect of his life. A graveside service is being held at 10 a.m., May 13, 2026, at Paola Cemetery.
