In partnership with the American Horse Council and the United Horse Coalition, the American Farrier's Association (AFA) announced the Farrier Direct Safety Net. Exclusively available to U.S.-based AFA members, the program is designed "to help horse owners facing temporary hardship keep their horses right where they belong — at home with the people who love them," says the AFA on Facebook.
The Farrier Direct Safety Net provides farriers with financial assistance of up to $300 per horse to care for horses with immediate podiatry welfare needs whose caretakers are facing financial hardship. Examples of treatments or services that could qualify include:
- Regular barefoot trimming
- Regular shoeing
- Emergency shoe replacement
- Abscess care
- Thrush/white line treatment
- Snow shoes
Any horse owners who think their horse might be a candidate for the program can contact their farrier to ask if they’re enrolled in the Farrier Direct Safety Net program. Farriers who would like more information on the program can fill out this form here.
If you prefer to contact someone directly, please reach out to Kelsey Buckley at (202) 296-4031 or ewdc@horsecouncil.org.
