Ontario farrier relies on teamwork, proactive decisions & creative thinking to help horses

For nearly 4 decades, farrier Steve McConnell has worked with horses affected by a wide range of hoof conditions.

Over that time, he has managed more than 300 laminitis and founder cases, losing 19 horses to the disease. In the past few years, however, McConnell has worked with 78 laminitic and founder cases — losing only one.

McConnell credits that shift to a combination of teamwork, proactive decision-making and the willingness to think creatively in real-world, on-the-road situations. By adapting his approach to each horse and collaborating closely with veterinarians and owners, he has developed practical solutions that continue to produce positive outcomes.

“Success with laminitis comes from collaboration — when the veterinarian, farrier and owner all work together,” says the Niagara Falls, Ontario, shoer. “There’s nothing magical about what I do. If the cause is addressed, pain is managed and the plan stays flexible, the horse has a real chance to heal.”
