Hall of Fame farrier Jim Keith is honored again with the Rounders Award out of New Mexico.

The award is named after The Rounders by Max Evans, a western novel published in 1960 and adapted into a 1965 movie starring Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda. The award was created in 1990 by former New Mexico secretary of agriculture Frank DuBois to recognize those who embody the spirit of the “western way of life.”

The Tucumcari, N.M., farrier is a four-time World Championship Blacksmith who has managed the American Farriers Team, judged competitions and taught horseshoeing around the world. He’s published I Never Called Myself a Cowboy and is working on his second book, Looking Back: 66 Years of Shoeing, according to the New Mexico Department of Agriculture.

Keith is the first farrier to receive the Rounders Award. Previous recipients include musicians, writers and artists. Two people were awarded this year, the second being Randy Hutson, a rancher, rodeo competitor and singer-songwriter. Click here to see a list of all past recipients.
