Over the past three decades, farriers have done a good job of routinely raising “trim only” prices to stay ahead of inflation while dealing with the increased cost of doing business.
From charging $16 for a trim in 1992 based on data from numerous American Farriers Journal Farrier Business Practices Surveys, the average price charged by farriers increased to $57.80 in 2025.
Between 1998 and 2023, farriers increased “trim only” charges from $22.07 to $60.31. Based on U.S. Consumer Price Index data, the increase in trimming charges from 1998 due to inflation should only have reached $41.39 in 2023. The $60.31 charge in 2023 represents a 46% increase over the yearly 25-year inflation rate of 2.55%.
Based on an anticipated yearly inflation growth of 3% from 2023 to 2028, the average trim price in 2028 should reach $69.92.
The data shown here comes from numerous American Farriers Journal Farrier Business Practices Surveys conducted over the last 33 years.
