Brazilian Captures Mail-In Forging Exercise Honors

This unique forging exercise helps shoers improve their forging skills and leads to higher quality day-to-day hoof-care work

Competitors had the sparks flying during the World Championship Blacksmiths’ Contest during the Calgary Stampede.

After participating in the Calgary mail-in forging exercise for 6 years, Flavio Souza captured top honors this year. The Brazilian farrier from Serra Negra, San Paulo, says earning this honor is one of the highlights of his shoeing career.

Capturing second place for the second straight year was Mark Lieser of Weslaco, Texas. Third place went to Tim Russell of Broken Bow, Texas. Rounding out the top five were Calvin Misener of Owensville, Mo., and David Schaefer of Greenville, Va.

Co-sponsored by American Farriers Journal and the Calgary Stampede’s World Championship Blacksmiths’ Competition, this year’s mail-in forging exercise drew 16 participants from a half-dozen countries.
