Make Sure You Charge For All The Little Things

A West Coast farrier says she is much more careful about charging in today’s tougher economy for some of the small things that she used to let slip by for the sake of effective customer relations. She charges extra if a horse takes more time due to behavior or neglect, provides a cost estimate for the shoeing work before getting started and only accepts cash or credit cards. Not only does she not take checks, but tries to actually put through the credit card charge before doing the work. She also sets a flat rate for her services and does a much better job of scheduling appointments in remote area on the same day to save time and fuel.

No Easy Answers For Laminitis Treatment

Bill Moyer says a major concern with treatment of laminitis is that many molecular, vascular and structural changes take place before the actual clinical signs appear. “No controlled studies have shown efficacy of treatment of horses in the acute, clinical stage of laminitis,” says the equine veterinarian at Texas A&M University.

“Aggressive therapy should be directed at the disease process that initiated laminitis. The use of pain-relieving medications to control pain and suffering is generally indicated, but the effect of these drugs on the outcome has not been scientifically established.”
