For better or worse, technology has infiltrated every aspect of life. Thanks to this ever-updating change, farriers can stay in touch with clients, maintain records and collect information quicker than ever. The purpose of this column will be to show farriers unfamiliar with computers that there are advantages to incorporating them into your business.

Most are familiar with having a desktop computer at home, but what about taking a computer along with you in your shoeing vehicle? What kind of portable computer makes the most sense?

The Whole World  In Your Hands

Fitting in a pocket, handheld devices range from personal digital assistants (PDA) to smart phones. The standard PDA is on the decline in the marketplace while smart phones are increasing their overwhelming presence.

Thanks to satellites and increased coverage zones of cell towers, the problem of poor reception is decreasing. Even in areas considered remote, you could use a smart phone to maintain phone contact and update your scheduling for the day.

Chester County, Pa., farrier Steve Teichman uses a handheld General Dynamics Itronix tablet computer. This is a solid design for those more comfortable with shorthand than hunting-and-pecking on a small keyboard. A solid advantage of this tool is its toughness.
