The University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center announced Pennsylvania farrier Dan Martzall as the new chief of farrier services. The certified journeyman farrier has extensive experience with therapeutic and performance horse shoeing, with over 2 decades of professional experience.
After graduating from Millersville University, Martzall attended Kentucky Horseshoeing School in 2004. After which, he apprenticed with Hall of Fame farrier Steve Teichman in Unionville, Penn. Following his apprenticeship, he co-founded a multi-farrier practice, Red Oak Equine Associates, in Wyomissing, Penn., with veterinarian and farrier Todd Meister. His clients have included athletes competing in events such as the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event, the Maryland 3/5, Fair Hill International and England's MARS Badminton Horse Trials and Burghley Horse Trials.
In June 2025, the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine announced Martzall's former apprentice, Victoria Protasenko, would take over as head farrier at the teaching hospital from Hall of Famer Travis Burns. Protasenko spent 4 years with Red Oak Equine Associates in Pennsylvania.
"Penn Vet's New Bolton Center has long been recognized for setting the highest standards in equine veterinary medicine," says Martzall. "I am proud to join New Bolton Center's dedicated clinical team, where farrier services are an integral part of a holistic approach to keeping horses healthy, sound and performing at their best."
