Dean Geis (New Windsor, Md.)
I’d like to acknowledge Dean Geis. I would not be a farrier today if it wasn’t for Dean. I had been struggling for many years as a farrier after multiple relocations around the country. I met Dean at the local blacksmith guild and he instantly took me under his wing. His truck always had an open invitation. After a short time we developed a great relationship, he was the mentor I had been craving since graduating farrier school. He gave me a tremendous appreciation and respect for the local horse world and the local farrier community, and held me to a standard that was unparalleled in any of my previous work. I have found a home here in Maryland and a network of like-minded farriers here all because of this man. I know I’m not the only one around here who owes their livelihood to Dean. If I never met Dean on that fateful Sunday, I most likely would have sold my tools and gone on to something else. I owe him my gratitude for being the best mentor anyone could have asked for. I hope to one day pass on his legacy to at least one person, but I know I’ll never match what he’s given to all the local farriers, vets, and horse owners he’s passed through. It was a bittersweet year for us as Dean decided to officially retire. But that also means more opportunities to get him in our trucks and show him how much he taught us.

Dean Geis is my mentor and someone I consider a father figure. He has guided me and molded me into the successful farrier I am today. He is someone our community looks up to. He is one of hardest working people I know. Besides being wonderful farrier, he is a loving husband and an all around cool man. He is someone that his clients, fellow farriers and vets in the area all know him and have more than enough good things to say about him. He is known for his good work, stellar music tastes, sense of humor, infectious smile and laugh. Not to mention his summer attire of suspenders attached to swim trunks. Thank you Dean for being you and thank you for being an amazing farrier.
