How are Horses and Airplanes Similar?

How learning physics can improve your farrier business

If you have attended any of my presentations, you know full well that I incorporate mathematics, trigonometry and physics into the explanations. My goal is to deliver a clearer and less disputable understanding. Of course, that is if I can teach the applications in a manner that is understood by all

The first article that included this approach was published in the December 1980 issue of American Farriers Journal, which used trigonometry to assist farriers in fitting shoes to the foot with a desired amount of build up to a hoof.

Physics is everywhere. Physical science applications are visible every day of our lives. We may not appreciate — or care – how much that science enters in our lives. Physics is not theory — physics is fact.

The Physics of Take Off

In addition to farriery, I also enjoy flying airplanes. In their training, pilots learn the physics of how the airplane flies. More precisely, pilots learn what forces are at play when an airplane is in flight. Simple right? You are probably wondering what this has to do with shoeing horses? We’ll get there, eventually.

Farrier Takeaways

  • Learning the physics of the horse’s gait and adjusting the shoeing techniques can help prevent lameness and maintain good hoof health.
  • Supporting the horse’s center of gravity is essential to supporting their overall health.
  • The mechanics of horses becoming airborne are similar to airplanes, with special attention going to weight and mass of both.

Think about the airplane sitting on…
