Boehringer Ingelheim is promoting laminitis awareness by encouraging veterinary practices in the U.K. to talk about laminitis with horse owners. It is also extending the life of its disease awareness initiative Talk About Laminitis to promote awareness, provide resources such as a laminitis assessment checklist for owners — and offer a special incentive to horse owners and veterinarians alike.

“As part of the campaign, the laboratory fees for the blood test that detects Cushing’s disease (the basal adrenocorticotropic hormone test) are free,” according to Vet Times.

The renewed efforts to raise awareness about laminitis come in the wake of research that discovered that horse owners did not recognize 45% of the laminitis cases diagnosed by a veterinarian.

“The statistics from these research studies are very concerning,” says Emmeline Hannelly, welfare education manager at the British Horse Society (BHS). “However, by working together and helping to educate horse owners, the awareness of laminitis and pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction will hopefully improve with these great resources.”

Talk About Laminitis is marking its seventh year as an initiative working to educate horse owners about this common hoof ailment. It is supported by three organizations: Redwings Horse Sanctuary, World Horse Welfare, and the BHS.
