Shear Forces Vary with Arena Surfaces, Study Finds

Shear forces between the hoof and the ground surface affect hoof kinetics and kinematics, as well as the development of injury to the lower limb. Researchers at the University of California, Davis and the University of Kentucky measured shear ground reaction forces on 12 show jumping arena surfaces and examined the impact of surface material type, as well as management and environmental conditions on those forces.

New assignments were announced in mid August for two members of the American Farriers Jour­nal (AFJ) team.

Jeremy McGovern takes on the additional duties as publisher of the world’s leading equine hoof-care publication. He also serves as the publication’s executive editor and conference director of the International Hoof-Care Summit.

Jeff Cota takes on the duties of managing editor after serving 2½ years as the publication’s associate editor.

August has been particularly rewarding for University of California, Davis veterinarian Susan Stover. First, the American Veterinary Medical Association honored her with its Lifetime Excellence in Research Award. Two days later, Stover was selected for induction into the University of Kentucky Equine Research Hall of Fame.
