Nebraska farrier Dr. Michael Shane Hanna passed away July 8, 2026. He was 72.

Hanna was raised in Cimarron, Kan., where he developed a fondness for animals and farm life. After moving to Lawrence, Kan., to work at Heck Hereford Farm, he pursued a passion for horses and attended farrier school in 1977. After completing farrier school, he worked alongside his father until 1981 and later served with Gray County from 1982-1986.

In May 1994, Hanna fulfilled his lifelong dream by graduating from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine and began a career as a veterinarian. Thoroughout his veterinary career, he worked in research, cared for both large and small animals and served with the USDA.

He treasured time with his family and enjoyed gardening, gunsmithing and coin collecting in his spare time. Hanna is survived by his three children, seven grandchildren, two sisters and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10 A.M. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the Cimarron Christian Church in Cimarron, Kan.
