Whitetop, Va., farrier John Hash died Friday, March 18, 2022, while surrounded by family. He was 69.

Hash lived on Whitetop Mountain most of his life, until recently moving to Lebanon, Va., to live with his daughter Emily.

A farrier by trade, Hash also worked as a blacksmith and was known for his horsemanship and his close community ties. Self-reliant to the core, he was knowledgeable in many fields, including history, agriculture, sports and current events.

Although no services are planned, the family encourages honoring Hash’s memory by doing one of his favorite things; visiting with a friend, appreciating spring and the new growth it brings, or star-gazing.
