Farriers from across the country had an opportunity to compete in what was for many the first four-person team contest of 2020 when the World Championship Blacksmiths hosted the Southeastern Team Challenge from Oct. 1-3 in Greensboro, N.C. Team Revolution, comprised of farriers Ben Mangan, CJF (Carthage, N.Y.), Tim McPhee, CJF (Epping, N.H.), Tyler Marshall (Chester, N.H.) and Mark Schneider (Middletown Springs, Vt.), won the challenge, which was held in coordination with the North Carolina Horseshoeing Association.

Teams competed in three classes:

  • Tooled and fullered class (making a front toe clip, hind ¾ fullered)
  • ¾ fullered class (making a Masselotte toe clip front and hind) and
  • draft class twice (making plain stamped Masselotte toe clips.)

They had 2 hours to complete the tooled and fullered and ¾ fullered classes, and 2 ½ hours to complete the draft shoes. 

A total of 11 teams competed. Second place honors went to team TMT, which consisted of Chris Madrid, CJF (Stanley, N.M.), Robbie Mederos, CJF, FE, (Danville, Calif.), Bodie Trnka, CJF (Jordan, Minn.) and Robert Jukes (Weatherford, Texas) and third place went to Team WCB — Mike Poe, CJF, AWCF (Columbia, M.D.), Carl Via, CJF (Mineral, Va.), Andrew Neilson CJF (Oxford, Pa.) and Dillon Crane, CJF (Waxhaw, N.C). Event judges were Bozeman, Mont., farrier Tom Petersen, CJF, and Mechanicsville, Va., farrier Russell Hite, CJF. A complete list of results is available on the WCB Facebook page.

The WCB 2020 National Championship will take place Dec. 3-5 in Fort Worth, Texas. The entry deadline is Nov. 6, 2020.
