Dartmouth, Mass., farrier William C. Owen passed away Thursday, July 11, 2019.
After serving in the United States military during the Korean War, Owen completed farrier training at Michigan State University. He worked as a blacksmith and farrier for more than 70 years in southeastern Massachusetts and the islands.
Owen was an avid horseman, trainer and breeder of the Morgan horses at Merrylegs Farm in South Dartmouth. He and his sister Mable were instrumental in the production of a nationally recognized bloodline of Morgans that continues to thrive. The brother-sister team also raised Hereford beef cattle, harvested hay and maintained the family’s historic homestead farm. Owen was a lifetime member of the Farm Bureau. He served on the Dartmouth Horseman’s Association, as well as the Dartmouth Agricultural Committee.
Burial will be private.
