A car crash outside of Middleburg, Va., killed equine veterinarian Kathryn Morton Krista, according to the Fauquier Times.  

The accident occurred when William A. Mendoza crossed the centerline on U.S. 50, striking Krista’s Ford Explorer head on, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Les Tyler. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Krista, of Bluemont, Va., attended Kansas University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, practicing in Kentucky and Florida before becoming an ambulatory veterinarian at Piedmont Equine in The Plains, Va. Her specialties were emergency care, gastroenterology and geriatric horses.

In a post on their Facebook page, the Piedmont Equine Practice wrote, “Katy will be deeply missed by all of us and all that knew her. We will work everyday to honor her memory.”

Krista leaves behind her husband Ben Krista, a farrier.
