Resveratrol Benefits Horses With Hock Lameness

An oral supplement containing resveratrol has been shown to be effective in treating hock lameness in horses, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medicine Association.

Each horse received either a placebo or a supplement called Equithrive Joint, which contains resveratrol. After 2 months, 20 out of the 21 owners whose horses received resveratrol reported an improvement compared with 14 out of 20 on the placebo. After 4 months, 18 out of 21 owners whose horses were on resveratrol reported an improvement, compared with 10 out of 20 using the placebo.

Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis Can Be Managed, Study Says

Using biomarkers to monitor joint deterioration in Standardbred racehorses, University of Turin researchers believe it’s possible to effectively manage post-traumatic osteoarthritis with proper treatment strategies.

Research published in BMC Veterinary Research showed that although the biomarkers declined after the first year while the horses rehabbed from injuries, and then became progressively prominent over time. The decrease in inflammatory markers suggested that post-traumatic osteoarthritis could be effectively managed.

Equine Use Of Water Treadmills Needs More Research

Water treadmills are popular for rehabilitation and training in humans, dogs and horses, with equine versions increasingly being found in research and therapy centers.
