The William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis is seeking an experienced farrier. Applications are due Monday, May 16, 2016.

The farrier will be “under the direction of a clinical veterinarian, perform all aspects of basic equine farriery in accordance with accepted farrier practices, in a collegial manner and independent of supervision. Additionally, [the farrier] perform therapeutic shoeing/trimming as prescribed or directed by the clinical veterinarian. [The farrier also will provide] instruction of veterinary students and house officers in basic farriery.”

The minimum qualifications include:

• Experience as a farrier.

• Experience working with and handling horses and livestock.

• Skill to recognize and handle difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals.

• Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse group of people to include clients, clinicians, students and staff.

• Skills to understand and follow verbal and written instructions in regard to basic care of large animal patients.

Candidates who have journeyman certification and experience using Veterinary Medical & Administrative Computer System (VMACS) are preferred, according to the UC-Davis job requisition.

The position pays $26.67 to $40.31 an hour.
