Students at Rice Elementary School in Tyler, Texas, received a crash course in shoeing from Ben Wheeler, Texas, farrier Lukas Becker.

During a recent career fair at the school, fifth-grader Jenna Cromer learned about a number of potential careers including florist, firefighter, zookeeper, attorney, engineer and police officer. Yet, students’ attention levels have a tendency to last longer when they have a chance to watch Becker trim and shoe a horse.

“I learned that every horseshoe won’t fit a horse,” she says. “You have to shape it to fit the horse, and if you don’t know what you are doing, you can maybe hurt the horse.”
