Clinchers: Tools For A Final Step
The right feel, height and angles are keys to finding the one that fits your work
CLINCHERS COLLAGE. Here are some of the styles of clinchers that farriers can choose from. The photo does not include all styles of clinchers available or products from all of the companies that make clinchers. 1. LOPEZ SADDLEBRED CLINCHERS: A traditional “alligator” style that many farriers still prefer. 2. CURVED JAW LOW-NAIL and 3. CURVED JAW CLINCHERS, G.E. FORGE & TOOL. The newest style of clinchers, designed to be easIer on the user as well as on the hoof wall. They are used by squeezing the reins together, without the “pulling down” motion used with traditional styles. 4. ADJUSTABLE CLINCHERS, J.C. TOOL: A style originally designed to allow a farrier to carry just one pair of clinchers. Popular with draft horse shoers. 5. HIGH-NAIL CLINCHERS, MFC TOOL. A high-nail clinchers designed to work on even draft and gaited horses. 6. “ERGO” LOW-NAIL CLINCHERS and 7. HIGH-NAIL CLINCHERS, ST. CROIX FORGE: A new design with slighty off-set handles to allow for a closer grip on clinches, as well as less strain on the farrier.
Clinchers are one of those tools that were originally developed to help farriers more easily do a job that they’d been doing by less mechanical means for years.
