The Hoof of the Horse

American Farriers Journal and the International Hoof-Care Summit are offering attendees who register for the 2019 International Hoof-Care Summit by Sunday, Jan. 13, the chance to win one of three copies of respected hoof-care expert and 2019 Summit speaker Dr. Simon Curtis' new book, The Hoof of the Horse

About Dr. Simon Curtis: Dr. Simon Curtis is a practicing farrier and worldwide lecturer from NewMarket, England. With more than 40 years of hoof-care experience, he has demonstrated farriery on six continents and published three textbooks on farrier practices. Curtis was awarded a doctorate for his project studying the development of the foal's hoof and has completed a 6-year Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at the University of Central Lancashire. Among many of his accomplishments, Curtis was awarded an Honorary Associateship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons — the first farrier to receive this award.

About The Hoof of the Horse: This book will take you on a journey tracing the development of the equine hoof, from its beginning in the mare’s uterus all the way through maturity. It is written in three sections which explore; the physical nature of the hoof, the five ages of the hoof, and affects upon the hoof. The shape of the hoof is linked to soundness and good health, and The Hoof of the Horse examines in detail why and how the hoof changes its form.

Featuring 250 beautiful full-color illustrations, this is a book to be read and enjoyed by anyone interested in the horse and how its unique hoof works. Ten years of scientific research into the hoof are explained in straight forward terms, giving the reader a deeper knowledge of the hoof than has ever been possible before.

Dr. Simon Curtis will participate in three presentations at the 2019 International Hoof-Care Summit in Cincinnati, Ohio Jan. 22-25.

During a Hoof-Care Roundtable on Tuesday, Jan. 22, “Hands-On Anatomy Warm-Ups,” Dr. Simon Curtis (along with  Dr. Mark Caldwell and Dr. Steve O’Grady) will introduce upcoming Summit lectures by utilizing anatomy models relevant to specific program topics. The trio will use Horse Science models from Allie Hayes as a “warm-up” to give attendees a head start on the terminology and anatomy that’s part of later presentations and a report you also will receive at the Summit.

In his General Session presentation on Thursday, Jan. 24, “Diseases and Conditions Of The Hoof Capsule,” Dr. Curtis will discuss how the hoof capsule is subject to invasion by microbes causing keratolysis, affected by keratomatous growth and cracked by trauma. Curtis believes farriery is involved in the treatment and alleviation of every assault upon the hoof capsule and will provide attendees with a better understanding of the diseases and conditions that afflict the hoof capsule.

During another impactful General Session on Friday, Jan. 25, “Together We Can Eradicate Club Foot,” Curtis will discuss the notion that club foot is the result of an unresolved flexural deformity affecting the distal interphalangeal joint, and that early recognition and treatment of the flexural deformity can successfully eradicate club foot. Attendees will gain knowledge on the four treatments used to ensure a favorable outcome of club foot.
