Atlantic, Iowa, farrier Bobby G. Rutherford passed away on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Neb. He was 78.

Rutherford’s love of horses started on the farm as a child, and he would sneak rides any chance he got. He competed in bareback and brahma bull riding competitions for several years while managing stock for a rodeo contractor. For eight years he also trained horses until he later became a full-time farrier for the next 46 years.

Bobby was a member of the Rawhiders Saddle Club in Atlantic and the Nebraska Farriers Association. In January 2015, he was inducted into the Iowa Horse Council Hall of Fame at Iowa State University in Ames. He trained his own Thoroughbred race horses and won competitions throughout Iowa and Nebraska.

The family will meet with friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Lewis, Iowa.
