There’s Nothing Magic About Any Shoe

Tracy Turner says you need a properly trimmed and balanced hoof capsule before you ever think about what shoe to use. “This may include modifying the toe where you can ease breakover, changing that breakover in some way or changing the weight-bearing area in the heels or branches of the shoe,” says the equine vet with Anoka Equine Veterinary Service in Elk River, Minn. “Get the hoof capsule in good shape and then use the shoe to change the mechanics.”

When The Electricity Goes Off, Be Aware Of “Dirty Power” Worries 

If you’re among the unlucky East Coast farriers who recently lost electricity in Hurricane Sandy or find yourself in a similar predicament in the future, don’t power up your computer (PC) from a gasoline generator. This advice comes from Bob Bly of River Vale, N.J., who had severe computer damage during Hurricane Sandy from hooking his computer up to electricity from a gasoline generator. His computer expert got his computer back online in a few hours and the only damage was to the backup drive. Other computer users had severe damage that ranged from the destruction of a motherboard to the total loss of all hard drive data.
