Every summer, I have a couple of horses that destroy their hooves from stomping at flies and being in wet grass all night.

These horses have really nice hooves all winter. I tried all the tricks I knew. I had farriers telling me to do a slow burn and that didn't help. I tried a red-hot burn and that did not help.

I burned my clips in so they were flush with the hoof wall, but when the horse’s hoof deteriorated around the clip, the shoe fell off. This left me moving clips around to try to get a better hoof. It was a vicious cycle.

One day, a farrier told me to stick a small piece of a leather pad behind my clips. This has been one of the easiest and greatest little tricks for these problem horses. I no longer lose shoes and the hoof does not break around my clips.
