Matthew Wimer (Smolan, Ks.)

Matthew Wimer, DVM, CJF excels in teaching and mentorship of students from aspiring farriers to veterinary students. He takes the time to visit the Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine on a regular basis throughout the year to assist with cases with the clinicians and provide the hoof-care for members of the teaching herd. In the fall semesters, he leads a course on podiatry for 2nd and 3rd-year veterinary students which includes teaching the students the basics of using rasps, nippers, and knives. His patience and positive teaching methods do not go unnoticed when working with students who may have never handled a rasp before.“Personally, I saw huge advancements in my skill as a farrier during just two weeks of riding with Dr. Wimer. With his guidance, I became much more efficient in sighting the foot to determining where I needed to trim the foot to bring it back into and maintain balance. He was well-balanced in giving criticism where needed and praise where it was deserved.”
