Wayne Berry

The following is a testament to how extremely valuable Wayne is, not just in terms of being a fantastic farrier, but how his dedication to the people and horses he serves makes a tremendous impact in people's lives. We couldn't do what we do for people like Cinnamon if we didn't have the incredible partnership that we have with Wayne Berry.

Our client Cinnamon Gulley wrote the following:

My retired, off-the-track Thoroughbred "Kid Rock" stepped on a nail with his right hind while in his paddock. By the time we found out and got him to the vet, he was severely septic in that hoof and leg. Kid underwent the "street nail" surgery. After surgery, Kid needed a hospital plate shoe, which had bolts to remove the bottom to allow draining and cleaning of the surgery site. After Kid beat back the infection it was time to assess the damage. We found that Kid had significant degradation to his navicular bone from the infection. This looked like the end for my 18-year-old boy.

We were facing a hard decision. That's when Dr. Doug Anez (DVM and owner of Pacific Crest Equine near Exter, Calif.) and farrier Wayne Berry came up with a plan to give Kid the chance we were looking for. Relying on radiographs, Wayne built Kid a custom shoe. Kid still needed a hospital plate, as his surgery site was still closing, but he also needed to have his hoof placed at an incline with wedges. The plan was to align his joint in a position that could allow his body to build sufficient scar tissue to hold his joint in proper place on its own without most of his navicular bone.

Wayne worked continually with radiographs and Kid over the months adjusting the angle of the wedge pads and building the custom hospital plate until finally Kid no longer needed the plate, but still the angled shoe. Then the day came when everything we had hoped for came true; Kid no longer needed a shoe at all and he had healed sufficiently to maintain the proper joint placement on his own! Kid went from destine to euthanasia to being pasture sound thanks to the continued work, expertise and out-of-the-box thinking of the Pacific Crest Equine veterinary team and farrier Wayne Berry. I got an extra two years with my dearest, oldest childhood horse./p>
