Dave Dawson

The definition of “leader” as I have described it in my writings and teachings is “one who inspires others to achieve greater personal heights or higher levels of performance.” Dave Dawson, of Uxbridge, Ontario, fits that definition in every possible way. As can be seen from the accompanying tributes, he continues to be an educator and mentor for other farriers. One of his clients (former Pan American Rider, current trainer and Level 3 coach) Andrea Bresee would clearly be unable to achieve what she has for her students were it not for the guidance of her farrier. But Dave is more than just a farrier. When I first met Dave, he was interested in garnering my assistance to help promote the concept of farriers not simply being technicians. Dave insisted that farriers needed to see themselves as business people and community leaders. In addition to being there to serve their customers, farriers hire apprentices and staff, they contribute to the local economy and, in his case, step outside the field to become professional and community leaders as well.

Dave continues to promote his profession by being active with the Canadian Association of Professional Farriers, the American Association of Professional Farriers and by serving on the Board of the North Eastern Association of Equine Practitioners. Notwithstanding what for most would be a very busy professional schedule, his leadership commitments go beyond farriery. In his own community of Uxbridge, Dave is a captain with the volunteer fire department but does not limit himself to simply answering the bell for fire calls. He also regularly pushes the department to improve its performance and efficiency for the sake of the community and the safety of his colleagues in the department. More important than anything, Dave continues to be a good husband for his wife, Tina, and a great father for his sons, Aaron and Tyler, as well as his daughter MacKenzie. Dave Dawson, when all is said and done, is an accomplished farrier, family man, community leader and mentor.

Dave is a tireless worker who, no matter what, will find time to help out those in need. His focus in life is always looking towards the future in whatever endeavor he is involved with and his decisions reflect that. No matter what the topic or issue, he wants to move forward, not dwell on the past. You won’t find a better business partner, sounding post or friend.

— Martha Worts, business partner

Dave has been my farrier since I moved to Uxbridge in 2007. He has been a great part of my team and my success, often times going out of his way to consult with vets and other farriers to ensure that he is doing the best he can to help, and is always willing to educate those around him and answer any and all questions we may have so we can keep our horses on top of their game. I have recently moved to his barn, Foxfire Equestrian, where I have been witness to his role as leader as well. His work ethic and attention to detail is truly inspiring.

Dave Dawson is, in one word, “incredible.” Dave has taught me so much in the last year and has mentored me in the farrier industry and the business aspect as well. His knowledge about life, farriery and business is absolutely astounding. Dave has helped me make a dream of mine become reality.

After 24 years of shoeing horses, I am continuing to meet new farriers and learn. I am grateful for the educational opportunities that I have had with Dave Dawson, a great farrier who also continues his education and passes so much on to others so generously.
