[Video] Hoof Impact and Foot-Off Accelerations in Galloping Thoroughbred Racehorses

To achieve optimal performance and low injury occurrence in horse racing, it is important to understand hoof-surface interactions.

In her study, Manchester, England, researcher Dr. Kate Horan measured hoof accelerations in retired Thoroughbred racehorses as they galloped over turf and artificial surfaces in four shoeing conditions using hoof-mounted accelerometers. She’ll share the findings from her work, and relay what this means in relation to muscoskeletal injuries of equine athletes.
