“Every company and every policy might vary on some exclusions or conditions from one farrier to another,” explains Kathleen Melton, a farm and liability specialist with Markel DIRECT.

She says farriers should read the list of exclusions on the policy and not hesitate in contacting an insurance agent to ask questions about “hypothetical” situations and how a policy might or might not respond.

Any farrier who swaps propane tanks with retailers should keep an eye out for valves and fittings that have been compromised while making methamphetamine or meth. Manufacturers of the illegal drug use the tanks for storing and using anhydrous ammonia. This causes fittings to break, leading to cracking of the valve body or its components and can ultimately result in a violent, unexpected expulsion of the valve from the cylinder. One of the telltale signs is blue discoloration around the valve or the stem fittings.
