Your Footcare Success Relies on Farriers

Earlier in his career, equine veterinarian Greg Staller attended a farrier clinic presented by International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame member Dr. Doug Butler. Staller was one of only two veterinarians among 80 farriers. For him, this was eye-opening to see the differences among farriers

As his career developed, Staller recognized more and more how working with a good farrier was key to his success with horses. Interactions with skilled farriers who were willing colleagues and insightful educators advanced his understanding.

“They saw that my intent was to help the horse, and not to laud that I was a veterinarian. They saw I was trying to solve problems,” recalls Staller, who owns and operates Running “S” Equine Veterinary Services in Califon, N.J. “As a sport horse veterinarian, I can’t be successful without knowing more about the foot myself, and having farriers who really can do the job.”

Staller says mutual respect and collaboration are essential for maintaining good relationships with farriers. He also credits an early career experience that damaged his relationship with a farrier. In treating a horse with cellulitis in the leg, the concerned owner questioned how the inflection could happen. The young veterinarian responded that it could be from several causes, such as a small scratch, dermatitis or a shoe nail. The client fixated on the shoe nail, called the farrier and told him that Staller said the cellulitis was caused by a nail driven too closely. The farrier called Staller, displeased about the client’s claim.
