I have a 17 year old morgan mare that fractured her coffin bone. I have used the bar shoe with 4 clips for 5 weeks. On x-ray she showed little to no improvement. Any Ideas? Am going to apply bar shoe with full rim around as recomended by vet. Thanks Boyd.

Boyd,
What type of coffin bone fracture (articular, non-articular)? This would make a good case scenerio to use in our lameness course.
We had three horses about two years that had non-articular coffin bone fractures we were shoeing at the college. Regardless of the shoeing approach, it took all the horses several weeks even months to get better. Two of the horses are very useable ranch horses today. I'm not sure what happened to the other horse. There is a lot of pressure and stress on the coffin bones of a healthy horse, imagine one that is trying to heal. The continuous clip or rim shoe should be a good approach to stabilize the hoof wall, which should help stablize the coffin bone. Good Luck!
