Keep seeing references to them, asked around, nobody knows. So, what ARE heel springs?

Heel springs are used to widen contracted heels. Most of the time you can drill on the inside of the heel of the shoe; and insert. Covers over the frog area and it keeps the heel expanded. It is old school, but I have used a few over the years.

I hear "nails high" so its harder to lose a shoe and when you do the foot doesn't come with it. "nails low" so the holes are gone by the next shoeing. What is the answer?

Low nails on low usage or show horses less chance of a hot nail. I go with high nails on cowhorses that get used hard on rough ground.

I as high a nail as possible on all horses.  It is less likely to tear a foot apart if they take it off.  You can always fill the old nail holes with wood putty.  Find the nail that you can drive the best.  I have 2 favorites, 5 silm blade and 12 slim blade.  I can drive these  nails just about anywhere I need them.

Also, low nails are for racehorses and others that are constantly being reshod.
