Help!!!! I need input from anyone who has experience with laminitic horses and 'sinkers'.

One of my clients has a 4 yr old QH mare which may have a coffin bone that is starting to sink (I don't know for sure yet, as the vet I need to talk to about the x-rays is out of town until Monday). The mare has abcesse at the coronary band and toe (in the sole) on both front feet - one about 30 days ago and the other about 10 days ago. The infection in the RF seems to be cleared up and healed. The LF is still open at the coronary band, but seems to be clean and healing. She is walking well and isn't showing signs of lameness even when I pick up a foot.

I'd like to shoe her and with pads in front, but haven't worked on her yet because I wanted to do some consultaltion with the vet and other farriers first. Any reading or Internet references to this type of problem would be greatly appreciated, as well as any suggestions for shoeing and future hoof care.

Thank you

You should consider refering this case to a Farrier who is experenced with these cases and watch and help him/her.

People will respect someone who is willing to learn and proactive in that pursuit.

You will learn much more with someone than just reading (note I said "just reading", reading and study is important too). Check out hopeforsoundness.com .

After you work on the horse with the other Farrier, buy them lunch and ask any questions you have or didn't want to ask in front of owners etc. People will want to help those who want to learn. Especially if they have someone buying them lunch.

My $0.02,

Bill

Hi Dottie,

Bill's advise is probably the best advise your likely to get.

It frightens me when I think of treating a possible sinker based on advise from a bulletin board. However great these boards may be, they're no substitute for experience. Get help and make sure you get that experience from somebody else!
