Today I heard about "power nippers" for trimming horses' hooves. Can anyone send me information about power nippers, where they are available, are they reliable, safe, how much, etc.?
Thank you,
Susan

Susan,
The only power nippers I am aware of are the
14" 10 x 2 GE Nippers (which stands for 14 inch reins, 10 fingers and 2 arms Grunt Effort :-)) No, seriously I have never heard of any other tpe of nipper power than human power. I have often thought of developing some type of ratchet nipper, but the anomalies of each individual hoof negate the use of a ratcheting mechanism. Never mind the fact that you may have to duck out from underneath that horse at any given moment and to leave a nipper attached to the hoof because it is in ratchet mode would prove disastrous to the horse! Brooks Lane Smithy makes a nice small spring loaded nipper designed for one handed use that works great for foals and fractious horses. Good luck on your quest!

Susan,
I am not familar with any nippers called power nippers; however, there is a nipper called an extra heavy-duty compound-action hoof nipper. They are 16" in length and require less leverage to use since they are double-jointed. I had a student that had a pair a few years ago and they seemed easy enough to use. He did not get them until near the end of the program, so I can not speak to how well they hold up. They do however come with replaceable blades.
At least one place they can be purchased is from NASCO which is a farm and ranch catalog company at 1-800-558-9595. They are approximately $55.00 with the replacement blades at about $10.00. Good luck!

I have a set of "bud's nippers". They are a compund nipper and work very well on extremely tough hooves. I ordered them from and ad in AFJ. They come with replaceable blades, which do need to be replaced pretty often, but other than that I am very happy with them.

There are two power nippers that I know of. The following website it one. I will try to locat the other which is run on hydraulics...and very expensive. I also want to make my own nipper but need someone who is good with engineering to put it together and make it work. My idea would revolutionize the process and take it to a whole new level. Know any engineers that want to get into a business??? HA!

The term "power nippers" could refer to powered by electricity. Yes, they do exist but not in a form we are accustomed to. A company in the U.K. makes them and you can see them @ www.hooftrimmingtools.net
