I read through the article in the journal about different methods farriers use to sharpen their hoof knives. Alot of good info in that article, I might add. But I did notice most people who didn't use diamond stick sharpeners all said they didn't like them because the pores plug up. I've got a little trick I do, that helps avoid that. Before using my sharpening stick, I give it a squirt of WD 40. That keeps the metal from building up in the pores, then when I'm done, I just wipe it off with a rag. The rag gets saturated with WD 40 after awhile, but I keep it oily, and use it to wipe down my tools, if they get wet.

I use the diamond sharpeners, usually give my knives a touch up each morning...I keep them pretty sharp, and by not taking off a lot of material from the blade, this should make them last much longer...I use a little water on my sharpener, seems to work very well for me.

Another thing that I do is after several strokes wipe the sharpner across the leg of my apron. It keeps the surface clean allowing the tool to cut effectively.

The diamond hone is all I use on my knives and the less you take off your knife at each sharpening the more money you will have in your pocket. My knives last over a year and the same for the hone.

I use "MARVEL MYSTERY OIL" exclusively it is also good to clean up the ANVIL with. Since Friction plays an intergral part of the sharpening process a good lubricant is needed and Marvel is the best that I have found. All I do is to "DIP" the Diamond sharpener into the MARVEL and then sharpen my knife-Very effective! Be careful, the sharpness achieved is beyond reproach!

I use a carbide sharpener call "speedy sharp".  I fine that after modified it by filing down the end so it will fit in the hook of the hoof knife. I seems to be on of the quickest and I can get a great edge on my knives.

Tom,

I use a dremel with a sharpening stone in it to sharpen all my knives.  Simple and fast for me.

I use a dremel once a week to clean the burrs off with a sharpening stone then I buff the edges of my knives with clear buffing wax having a buffed edge increases the life of the edge by about %25
