What causes a hoof to crack from the hairline down? I have a horse with cracks on both front feet on the inside quarters, about an inch to a inch and half long. He doesn't interfere or hit and is not lame. He has had this about four months.

While there can be a number of causes of hoof cracks, the primary cause is hoof capsule imbalance, often and regularly caused by improper trimming and shoeing.

While your horse is not, at present, lame, unless the cause of the cracks is determined and rectified, he well could become so, and even should he remain sound, these cracks could well worsen and become bleeders.

I have come across this problem quite often here in Ohio. I think, in most cases it is because of lack of nutrition. Something in the horse's diet is missing. What I have done is recommended a good biotin product. If you have enough room go ahead and burn a hole at the top of the crack with a hot rod with a point on it. Remember you are the top of the hairline so you don't have much room for error! What happens is the hole acts just as it is in leather the hole if it is burn deep enough the crack will stop. Good luck, just remember not too deep.
