Robert,

I've been accepting credit cards for ten years or so now.  I've use several methods to process credit cards and now use an app for my IPhone to process cards.  They also make a reader for several phones also.  There are many ways and options and I would suggest you study the fees closely before jumping into any one system.  That being said, taking credit cards will increase your income gathering options.

Please don't hesitate to ask further questions.

Blessings,

I'm not a farrier so I cannot comment on how paypal works in that aspect, but I do use it for business and have found it to be useful. In comparison to other credit card processing companies, paypal has the cheapest rates by far. You can either invoice, have the customer send you the money from thier account, or process a credit card right on your computer/smart phone.

As a business, I would avoid using PayPal at all costs.

PayPal is not a bank and does not provide its merchants with a Merchant Account, rather a PayPal account. There is a big difference between the two.

With a Merchant Account, your funds are deposited into your

personal or business bank account, which you control and which is also protected by Federal Banking Regulations.

With PayPal, your money is deposited into a PayPal Account, which PayPal controls. Since PayPal is NOT a bank, they do not

need to follow federal banking regulations. These regulations are in place to help protect you and to avoid issues like having their bank account frozen for weeks or months with no explanation. Because PayPal is not regulated in the same way as a Merchant Account, PayPal accounts are frozen for almost anything and without warning. The account can usually receive money while it is frozen,

but it certainly cannot withdrawal money. Once an account is frozen, the funds are often held by PayPal for months on end with absolutely no recourse for you.

Run you business correctly and get a Merchant Account.

Some other points..................

1. According to PayPal accepting their ToS (Terms

of Service) in effect means you waive your rights to credit

card consumer protection laws if you want to use their service, and that you may not issue a chargeback for unauthorized use of your credit card and PayPal account, or if you do, then they have the right to limit your account.

2. Their customer service is horrible. They used to hide their telephone number, (intentionally - by their own admission) and only provided support via "form"

emails.

3. Their terms of service are not completely disclosed upon signup and some key "conditions" are not disclosed. They fail to mention

their total lack of security to prevent your account from being compromised by phishing and spam sites. That if your account is accessed by a criminal using one of these methods, PayPal will hold you monetarily and legally responsible!

4. Also, no place do they openly tell potential members that their money is 100% at risk. That PayPal can, will, and has in the past, completely cleaned out customers' accounts, (including your checking or savings account) with no appeals process available. Instead they bury in the fine print of 37 pages of their "Terms of Service" (ToS) where they disclose to you that PayPal can close

your account for any reason what-so-ever, or no reason, and then you have to wait 180 days to get your money.

These items do not make sense for a business to risk the chance.

In both of my businesses I use PayPal and a separate credit card processing company. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. I have been using PayPal for several years for online transactions and the very few problems I have had were quickly resolved. There aren't any hidden "gotcha" fees like the credit card processing companies love to tack on, and no contracts. It's easy to set up an account.

I hate checks. It takes time to fill out deposit slips, stop at the bank at the end of a long day, and deal with any returned checks. Even worse are the few times I have been busy working under horses, stuff a check in my jeans or a pocket on my chaps and promply forget about it. I once found a 6 month old check under the seat of my truck while looking for something else. My bank doesn't provide a copy of the deposited checks, so I have to make photocopies at home for my records before I deposit them.

For a hoof care business where you are working out of your truck, I think a credit card scanner for your phone is the way to go. Just read the agreement carefully and know what fees you are being charged. The fees are a tax deductible business expense. The ability to accept credit may be the difference between a customer buying additional services and products from you at that visit, or opting for only basic services. Ultimately, you can increase your sales and income by taking credit cards.
