I live in south La. and my 7 month old filly needs her hoofs trimed. I find this is young ? I havent had horses in over 30 yrs and never raised a baby before just wondering if this is uncommon. I have soft ground this time of year from the rainy season and we don't have rock like Tn. does in Cajun Country...

Assuming that there are no obvious problems your filly should have her feet inspected every four to six weeks from birth to around one year old. Small conformation defects, when not properly identified, can lead to a lifetime of problems for your filly. Feet are dynamic structures and they can change shape based upon a variety of factors. Uneven eight bearing from asymmetrical feet will cause growth plates in her legs to mature into permanent conformation defects.

Well said Bob, I shoeing and trim for two brood mare ranch's on the island of Molokai Hawaii and have found it to every body's advantage to start trlming early. There was a articul in AFJ about two + years ago that exspland why it's good to start early and I would not be able to exsplain it any better, it gave me much confidence and has been a great tool in my box.
