Yellow Is The Color For Forge Welding

If you are forge welding in your shoeing work, Russell Colvin, a certified journeyman farrier from Jasper, Ala., says you should heat your stock until both pieces that you want to join together are yellow.

Colvin says orange means the metal is not hot enough, while white is too hot. Both pieces of material have to be at the same welding temperature. If you are jump welding, you can be sure you are at this temperature by rubbing the pieces together while they are in the fire. When they stick, they are at the right heat.
