Tips From The Forge
As part of the 35th anniversary celebration of American Farriers Journal, each
2010 issue will include a list of 35 tips, items or pieces of advice on a particular topic taken from the AFJ archives. The January/February issue features a list of 35 forging tips, including this one.
“When you’re pulling clips, you don’t want a really light hammer, and you don’t need a big, heavy hammer because you have to have control. My preference is to use a hammer that’s about the same weight as my rounding hammer. That way you develop a sixth sense about swinging your hammer and you have more control. If you’re using a 2-pound rounding hammer and then you grab a 10-ounce ball-pein hammer, you’re going to have difficulty. Whether it’s a ball-pein, cross-pein or clip-pein hammer, you have to have very controlled blows for drawing your source material for your clip.”
