Providing Access To An Abscess
If you’re dealing with an abscess, you might want to try this tip from College Station, Texas, farrier Don Sustaire. If the location of the abscess track is beneath the shoe, he’ll drill a hole in the shoe over the location. That allows the owners or a veterinarian to apply medication to the abscess, but keeps the shoe in place to support the hoof wall. The hole can also be plugged with a putty to keep debris from getting in, sometimes with medicated hoof packing putty.
The tip was shared by Robin M. Dabareiner, an equine veterinarian from Texas A&M., who frequently works with Sustaire. Dabareiner was speaking at the Northeast Association of Equine Practitioners Invitation to Excellence Symposium, held at the Foxwoods Casino and Resort in Connecticut during late September.
my OTT TB fractured his coffin bone (dorsal lateral slab)that fortunately didn't affect his heel first landing. He'd been bare for two years so had awesome frog/deep digital cushioning which in my opinion is what saved him. Anywho....not only did he fracture, he half degloved the outer wall from toe to heel (wall was held by rock, coffin bone blew out sole heel to toe and disengaged laminae on entire outer 1/2 of wall...fun!) He stayed bare, hosed, turned out 24/7 in Simple Boot and is 100% sound and building concavity weekly. He abscessed sole and coronet as he healed....wrapping brought temp up 1-2 degrees and caused his leg to stock. Pressure comes from inside people. Tetanus booster and hosing.Let it drain!
Kaeco's Epsom Salt Poultice works extremely well in drawing out abscesses!
I have often relieved an abscess using a cow manure poltice. It works so much quicker than anything else
To properly treat the abscess it is better to open the abscess and medicate with sugardine(sugar nad Iodine)for three days. Then shoe the horse with a pad and medicated packing.
